You receive one of them - the bonus one - after you choose your life aspiration.
As for the remaining three, you’re free to pick them yourself.
In the case of achild, you make your choice from among a bit limited pool of traits.
With theteenager, you pick two characteristics and with anadolescent,adultorsenioryou pick three.
Characteristics have been put into four categories: mental, hobby, lifestyle and social.
Emotional traits
Active- These Sims want to perform physical exercises, they are oftenhyperactive.
Genius- they are oftenfocused, want to develop their mental abilities.
Hot-Headed- they tend to get angry when subject to mischief, they are oftenangry.
Goofball- They tend to bePlayful.
Creative- they want to be constantly creative, tend to beinspired.
Gloomy- tend to besad.
Romantic- tend to beflirty, desire romantic interactions.
Cheerful- tend to behappierthan the other Sims
Self-Assured- tend to beConfident.
Hobby traits
Music Lover- they like listening to music and they arehappywhen they play musical instruments.
Bookworm- they like readingbooks, they can talk aboutbookswith the other Sims in unique ways.
Art Lover- such a Sim enjoys works of arts, thanks to which he receives positive moodlets.
Slob- household appliances get dirty faster around them but they do not worry about that whatsoever.
Clumsy- they fail more often, e.g.
while exercising, but they do not see it to be a reason to get angry.
Insane- their reactions are often unpredictable and they can talk to themselves.
Loves Outdoors- THese Sims gethappy, when outdoors.
Bro- becomeconfidentaround the other Sims that they know, they getenergizedwhile watching sports.
Family-Oriented- they arehappyaround the family members andsadif they do not talk to a family member, over time.
Outgoing- they receive strong moodlets while interacting with the other sims; their level of social need drops faster.
Evil- they arehappyaround Sims with negative moodlets, getangrywhile interacting with the good Sims.

But there are many more, sometimes quite unexpected opposites.
